ARCHIVED - Two-million-euro Emergency department extension opens at Seville hospital
The Andalusian regional government has allocated 11,712 million euros, 7 per cent of the region’s GDP, to the health budget this year.
A new extension to the Emergency department at Seville’s Virgen Macarena University Hospital has been inaugurated this week by the president of the Andalusian regional government, Juanma Moreno.
The extension was built in record time, just four months, and involved an investment of 1.9 million euros for the building itself and 280,000 euros for state-of-the-art medical equipment.
Covering an area of almost 1,000 square metres, the extension includes two channels to separate respiratory emergencies and patients who may be infectious from the rest. There are 18 spacious, monitored treatment cubicles for increased safety of both medical staff and patients, and the equipment includes four ventilators, eight oxygen systems, two latest generation wireless ultrasound machines and POCT (point-of-care testing) apparatus to obtain results in just minutes.
Sr. Moreno explained that Andalusia is now spending more than ever before on improvements to the public health system and facilities, which were in dire need of attention. Since his government took over, he said, the health budget has increased by 20 per cent and 118,000 new professionals have been hired.
In 2020, 307 million euros were spent on improving and modernising the Andalusian health services, the regional president reported. Work has been done in all eight provinces and improvements have been made to Emergency departments, ICUs, health centres, high-performance hospitals and other facilities.
