ARCHIVED - Unqualified Malaga-based pet physiotherapist faces 18 months in jail if found guilty of intrusion
The northern European woman living in Coín, Malaga, allegedly offered animal physiotherapy treatment without a veterinary degree
In a judicial first in Andalusia, an animal physiotherapist in Coin, Malaga, who allegedly operated without the appropriate qualifications faces trial for a crime of intrusion and could face up to 18 months in prison if found guilty.
The Malaga Business Association of Veterinarians (CEVE) hired the services of the company Detectys four years ago to investigate a woman living in Malaga province who is thought to be either Dutch or Belgian and who allegedly offered treatments to animals without a veterinary degree.
According to lawyers José Ignacio Francés and Francisco Redondo, from IFS Abogados which represents the CEVE and the Malaga Veterinary Association, "Aemave hired Detectys to investigate this woman and discovered that she was offering animal physiotherapy treatment, both at her home and during visits".

The woman apparently has a degree in animal physiotherapy approved in Holland that is not recognised in Spain, and the lawyers have stressed that "any activity involving treatment on animals in Spain is reserved for veterinarians".
According to the indictment, the defendant offered osteopathic and animal physiotherapy services, during which she used treadmills, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy and provided muscle massages.
In addition, she charged 50 euros per session and promoted herself through social networks presenting herself as a "professional in the field of animal physiotherapy".
The CEVE complaint was filed in 2018, but it was found the woman was still practising as an animal physiotherapist in March 2021. The trial, the first of its kind in Spain, begins today, Monday October 3, in the Criminal Court 5 of Malaga.
