ARCHIVED - Virtual and in-person tours in Paseo Matematico Al-Andalus initiative in Andalucía
The initiative aims to reveal hidden mathematical elements in historical monuments and buildings in the cities of Granada, Córdoba and Sevilla
A new project entitled, ‘Paseo Matemático Al-Ándalus’, is being launched in three major cities in Andalucía to allow residents and visitors to learn about the rich history and culture in this region through virtual and in-person "mathematical" tours.
The tours, which will take place in Granada, Córdoba and Sevilla, will combine science, art and history and feature some of the most emblematic monuments in Andalucía.
Through these mathematically themed visits, participants will be able to learn about the most characterizing details of important monuments, as there is a strong connexion between maths, history and artistic significance in the area.
The region of Andalucía, along with the rest of Spain, was first invaded by the Muslim tribes in 711 A.D., who named the territory Al-Andalus and brought several cultural elements and scientific and mathematical advances with them to the Iberian Peninsula; architecture and design from this period is all built around mathematical principles.
In the first phase of the project, eight in-person tours will take place: four in Granada (visits to Alhambra and Palacios Nazarías), two in Córdoba (to the Mezquita and Sinagoga) and two in Sevilla ( focusing on the Almohad part of the Cathedral, the Real Alcázar and the Torre del Oro. The tours on offer will be adapted to the demand.
The ‘Paseo Matemático Al-Ándalus’ uses GeoGebra software to trace mathematic layers over images of the buildings and monuments. The tours will also include modelling pieces, such as muqarnas, domes or arches in 3D, which participants can use to design different pieces.
The initiative is aimed at all types of public, but especially towards science and art lovers, students and curious tourists.
In addition to the in-person tours, there are also virtual tours available online on the ‘Paseo Matemático Al-Ándalus’ website (https://paseosmatematicos.fundaciondescubre.es) and on a new mobile app, available on IOS and Android, where the user can learn about the mathematical approach hidden in the historical heritage in Andalucía.
Tours and activities will be loaded throughout the next few months as the project develops.
The initiative, which has been coordinated by the Fundación Descubre, is currently undergoing final touches and is expected to be fully operational in the next few months.
