ARCHIVED - Wine production in Almeria down 20 per cent since last year
Andalucía and other Spanish regions have been affected by bad weather
The province of Almería, Andalucía, has seen a 20% decrease in grape production compared to the previous year, according to data from the Association of Young Agriculturalists (Asaja), who also indicated that the reduction was due to “drought”.
However, the quality of the grapes in Almería, and therefore the wine, has not declined and is still “exceptional”, stated a representative from the association.
Asaja have also noted that other wine-producing areas of Spain, such as Castilla La Mancha and Extremadura, also experienced a similar decrease, meaning that the national production totals between 38 and 39 hectolitres; a figure which is a lot lower than the predictions made in the summer.
This year’s national figure is 11.5% lower than the average from the last four harvests.
Storm Filomena, spring frosts and hail damage are amongst the causes listed by Asaja, who mentioned that other European countries have also been affected by this year’s weather, with France reporting a 30% decrease on its national yearly average in the past five years.
However, according to the Almería association, the wine market has actually seen improved figures, as the winemakers of the province have reported an “improvement in the marketing and consumption of wine”, as important sectors reopen after the worst of the pandemic, including the hotel and events sectors.
