ARCHIVED - Gibraltar police fined 10,000 pounds for Data Protection mishandling
Officers’ details were leaked by the Royal Gibraltar Police, which reported the breach to the Information Commissioner themselves
The Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP) force has been fined £10,000 by the Information Commissioner of the Regulatory Authority for breaches of the Data Protection Act and the EU Data Protection Regulations.
The incident in question relates to personal data held by Gibraltar police, including details of current and previous employees, as well as information on law enforcement matters and criminal proceedings.
This data was unlawfully disclosed and an independent investigation also found serious issues with the security measures put in place by the RGP to protect personal data.

It was the RGP itself that informed the Information Commissioner of the breach, in line with its obligations under the Data Protection Act. They also notified the people whose data had been leaked, although they were found to have done so with an unreasonable delay.
Now, Information Commissioner John Paul Rodriguez has said that, while police force is taking steps to improve their data protection operations, the severity of the breaches identified in this investigation are of concern. It is hoped that this heavy fine of £10,000 serve to deter any future breaches.
For its part, while it is bolstering its Data Protection processes, the RGP is considering whether to lodge an appeal against the fine, on the basis that they diligently declared their data protection breaches as required by law.
