ARCHIVED - 230 filling stations sanctioned in Spain for ramping up prices
The companies have been slammed for hiking up fuel costs the day the discount was applied in Spain
FACUA-Consumers in Action has named and shamed no fewer than 230 service stations across Spain for raising their prices on April 1, the day that the government imposed a 20 cent per litre fuel discount to ease the burden of soaring petrol and diesel prices exacerbated by the war in Ukraine.
The association has filed complaints with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) against 230 gas stations located in 37 provinces of thirteen autonomous communities.
Under the government discount scheme, which will remain in place until June 30, the Executive will subsidise 15 cents while the filling stations themselves will be responsible for the remaining 5 cents. To mitigate this, FACUA claims that 208 of the more than 5,000 service stations in the country increased diesel by 5 cents, while 171 hiked up petrol by the same amount.
Andalucía has been the worst offender, raising prices in 65 establishments in Almeria, Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaen, Malaga and Sevilla.

Castilla-La Mancha occupies the second position, with 46 gas stations, followed by the Valencian Community, which upped its prices in 11 stations in Alicante, one in Castellón and 20 in Valencia, for a total of 32.
Extremadura (21), Catalonia (18) and Barcelona (9) are next in line.
For its part, complaints have been filed against 10 petrol stations in the Region of Murcia.
The underhanded move has been recorded in 37 different provinces across the country, and Spain’s largest provider, Repsol, is coming under the most fire.
Of the 230 service stations reported, 26 belong to Repsol. In second place, the chain that has received the most complaints is ES Carburantes, with twelve, followed by Farruco SA, with ten. Next, Cepsa, with eight gas stations, Galp with seven, MaxOil with six and BP with four.
