5 unique museums in the province of Almeria
The Andalucía province is home to several fascinating museums as well as archaeological sites
Walking through a museum represents a journey through the history and culture of the region, and Almeria is not only rich in archaeological sites but also has a plethora of fascinating museums which allow visitors to delve into the lives of its people and unique artistic personalities.
Museo de la Escritura
The Museum of Popular Writing in Terque has prioritised the conservation of historical documents penned by the renowned people of Almeria. The museum and its archive are located in the Casa de los Yebra and today house more than 10,000 letters and papers.
In 2008 it was incorporated into the Network of Archives and Researchers of Popular Writing, to which several different Spanish archives and museums belong, all working to conserve, investigate, disseminate and raise awareness about the protection of Almeria’s documentary heritage.
Museo del Agua de El Saltador
The El Saltador Water Museum, according to its president, is “a walk through the history of water and its applied technology; from the shoring, waterwheels and cisterns built by Romans and Arabs, the irrigation on foot that our parents applied, to the most current ones, by dripping, hydroponics and without soil; a visual history of all hydrological techniques throughout history, from the oldest means of drawing water to transfers and desalination. In short, a tribute to the water that has transformed our region”.
The museum occupies the old building that once housed the pumps for the upper water channel of the Tajo-Segura transfer, to the community's reservoir, and the outdoor space has been adapted for outdoor, working exhibitions.
Museo de la Guitarra Espanola ‘Antonio de Torres’
Situated in the heart of Almeria, the Museum of the Spanish Guitar ‘Antonio de Torres’ is not just an exhibition space, but an interactive information centre which allows visitors to learn all about one of the most famous musical instruments in the world.
Museo Taurino
The Roquetas de Mar Bullfighting Museum aims to immerse visitors in this unique heritage and should delight lovers of the festivals as well as anyone wanting to know more about the world of bullfighting. Set across five rooms complete with exhibitions, audiovisual and press features, this unique museum will take you on a journey through this part of the national culture.
La Cueva Museo
The Cave Museum in Cuevas del Almanzora houses a special collection of agricultural tools, furniture, kitchenware and domestic appliances and is located in an authentic local cave house. Prehistoric caves dating back between fifty thousand and one hundred thousand years can be found in this region of Almeria and many are remarkably preserved.
This cave museum represents the way of life in the middle of the 20th century, with all the significant utensils of the era.
