ARCHIVED - 82-year-old Granada hunter investigated for fatally shooting dog belonging to hiker
Police in Granada have launched an investigation into the alleged case of domestic animal abuse

The Guardia Civil in Granada is investigating an 82-year-old hunter who shot dead a hiker's dog in Sierra de Baza.
The tragic incident occurred on March 9 at a hunting reserve in the La Molinera area of the Sierra de Baza Natural Park.
According to police sources, the suspect was hunting partridge when he claims he saw a dog approach and feared it was a stray that would attack his game, so he fired at the animal, killing it on the spot.
Moments later, the owners of Nerón, a six-year-old Catalan shepherd dog crossbreed, arrived on the scene and immediately called the Guardia Civil.
Officers from Guardia Civil Huéscar's Nature Protection Service (Seprona) took a statement from the owner of the dog, who told them he was walking in the bush with his dog and some friends when they heard a gunshot and saw the animal, which was running a few metres ahead, fall to the ground.
The hunter admitted to firing the shot when he saw the dog approaching the partridge's cage because he feared it would attack it and "the bird had cost him a lot of money".
Nerón paseaba con su familia por el Parque Natural de la Sierra de Baza (Granada) cuando un cazador le mató de un disparo porque "pensaba que era callejero" y que "le iba a robar las piezas de caza".

Animal rights party PACMA is now considering appearing as an interested party in the legal proceedings against the hunter.
According to PACMA, the animal had been shot in the back with no exit wound.
"Realising their pet had been fatally wounded, they could only hold the dog tight," said PACMA.
