ARCHIVED - Aguilas Carnival cancelled for second year running
The municipality of Águilas in Murcia has cancelled their 2022 Carnival due to Covid
Following a meeting between representatives from the local Town Hall and members of Carnival associations, a majority vote decided that the Águilas Carnival 2022 would be cancelled due to the pandemic for the second consecutive year.
Most of the attendees were in favour of the decision, with 24 votes to 10, and the Town Hall has explained that the suspension of the festivities was mainly due to the fact that it is impossible to predict what the Covid restrictions will be in February, which is when the Carnival is usually celebrated.
Another factor was the regional Health Ministry’s request that Águilas create a contingency plan for every one of the activities included in the Carnival, which would be almost impossible logistically.
Representatives from the Town Hall also mentioned that the Águilas Carnival should be celebrated to its full extend, with participants able to dance, socialise and have fun without worrying about restrictions, which is why the local authorities hope that the 2023 Carnival will be equivalent to the pre-pandemic celebrations.
Fortunately, for residents and visitors who don’t want to miss out on the Carnival experience completely this year, the Águilas Carnival Museum remains open to the public. For more information about the museum’s opening times click here.
