The Guardia Civil in Almería have rescued dozens of dogs from a shelter in the town of Antas which was supposed to be taking care of the animals and finding them nice, new homes.
In an investigation by the environmental protection brigade of the Guardia Civil, SEPRONA, it was found that nearly one hundred animals in the shelter were living in terrible hygienic-sanitary and animal welfare conditions.
This investigation began in November 2023, when, following a complaint, it was discovered that several animals on the premises were in deplorable conditions and showing significant signs of malnutrition.
During the course of their investigation, it became clear that the same woman who ran the shelter had been the subject of numerous complaints in both Almería and Málaga, as well as having been investigated on a previous occasion for allegedly stealing two dogs.
Her source of income came from donations received from unsuspecting well-wishers and from selling the dogs, mainly to buyers in other European countries, for around 500 euros each. She apparently sold around 150 dogs in this way per year.
All the animals in the facility have been taken to various other animal protection associations in the region to be cared for properly, while the owner will have to appear in court.
