Almeria AVE: Work to begin soon on 3-year project to create high-speed rail link
The project to move Almería’s train tracks underground, which has been 30 years in the making, will take 3 years and cost 165 million euros
It has been far too many years coming, but finally there is hope that work will soon be starting on the project to bring the AVE high-speed train connection to the Andalucía city of Almería.
This week, a billboard was erected announcing the works of the second phase of the work, which involves moving the city’s railway tracks underground in order to allow the AVE (which stands for ‘Alta Velocidad’ of High-Speed) trains to enter.
Currently, Almería’s railway tracks cut a large part of the city in two, meaning long detours around them or over the pair of bridges for pedestrians and motorists. Work to move the train tracks underground – as has already happened in so many other Spanish cities – has been slow to get off the ground, so to speak.
Located at the end of the line, rail links from Almería to other major urban centres in Spain are not especially frequent or fast, though the coaches that leave from the bus station, which is located in the same place as the train station, do depart regularly to Córdoba, Granada and Murcia.
The installation of the works sign by the Almería railway tracks this Thursday November 9, 2023 indicates that the official start of the works is just around the corner.
It is expected to take three years and involve an investment of 164 million euros to complete this second phase, which will totally transform the appearance of the city.
Almería City Council first drew up its proposal for the remodelling of the railway access to the city in November 1993, 30 years ago, but now it seems this train may finally be leaving the station.
