Almeria beats heat record for highest February temperature ever
The Andalucía provincial capital smashed its previous heat record, set 17 years ago, by 1.5ºC
The weather station at Almería Airport, which is the main reference station in the provincial capital for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), recorded the highest temperature in its history for a month of February on Wednesday February 14.
The station recorded a temperature of 26.7ºC at 2pm this Wednesday, smashing the previous record high temperature for February, which was 25.2ºC, recorded on February 16, 2007.
The Almería airport weather station has been recording meteorological data since 1968, so February 14, 2024 will go down in history as the hottest February day in Almería for at least the last 56 years.
Furthermore, this was also the highest temperature recorded in the whole of mainland Spain for the day. In the Canary Islands, it was even warmer, with thermometers registering over 30ºC in Antigua (Las Palmas).
Meteorologists have explained that these high temperatures are due to the Foehn effect caused by the north-easterly and easterly winds in the Bay of Almería. The Foehn effect is essentially the warming of the air as it descends the slopes of the mountains opposite the direction of the winds.
This weekend, Andalucía is in for more dry and sunny conditions, once the Thursday storms and red rain have passed.
