The 24-year-old motorist has been arrested following the horror crash in Níjar in which a third cyckst was injured

Two cyclists have been killed and another injured after a drunk driver ploughed head-on into a group of cyclists on the AL-4200 in Níjar, Almería.

The driver veered into the oncoming lane at speed on a bend at kilometre 7 careering into the three cyclists, according to the Emergencias 112 Andalucía and the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), fatally injuring two and wounding a third.

The crash happened at around 9.40am on Sunday July 24, and when breathalysed, the 24-year-old motorist tested positive for alcohol with a blood alcohol level of 1.07 mg/l. He was arrested on two charges of manslaughter by negligence and another against road safety.

Within minutes of the horror smash, 112 received numerous calls reporting that a car had overturned after hitting several cyclists on a section of the AL-4200 that is not included in the catalogue of protected cycle routes.

Personnel from the 061 Health Emergency Centre, the Guardia Civil's Traffic Department and the Fire Brigade were sent to the scene, as "people were trapped and needed releasing following the accident". A municipal maintenance team then spent two hours clearing the road.

No further details regarding the victims have been released as yet. The driver has been jailed.
