ARCHIVED - Almost 200 immigrants reach Cadiz and Almeria in one weekend
Amongst the 182 migrants who arrived in Andalucía since Friday are two men who tried to cross the Strait of Gibraltar in an inflatable tyre
The constant stream of irregular immigrants attempting to reach the Costa del Sol continues, as 182 migrants arrive in Cádiz and Almería over the weekend.
On Friday night (September 3), a migrant boat with 17 Algerian immigrants aboard and a kayak with four Algerians aboard were intercepted off the coast of Cádiz by Maritime Rescue Services.
The following day, on Saturday, a total of 86 migrants were rescued as they attempted to reach Cádiz along with 43 individuals on their way to Almería.
Three boats caught attempting to reach Cádiz had 50, 27 and nine passengers, respectively, including four minors and a woman. The migrant boats, or pateras, were intercepted off playas de Cortadura, Puerto América and playa de Roche, all in the province of Cádiz.
Meanwhile, a further four pateras were caught trying to reach Almería; one on Saturday afternoon with ten people aboard, including two women and a minor, and three in the early hours of Sunday morning, with two, 14 and 13 passengers aboard respectively.
At 6.00 in the morning on Sunday (September 5), Maritime Rescue Services in Cádiz rescued 29 men and one woman from a patera found 8 miles off Castillo de San Sebastián.
The latest incident happened at around 9am on Sunday morning, when Maritime Rescue had to help a man attempting to cross the Strait of Gibraltar on an inflatable tyre. The first immigrant informed the emergency services that he was crossing the sea with another man who had fallen off the inflatable, but fortunately, the second man was also located and rescued.
The nearly 200 irregular migrants rescued in Andalucía this weekend are added to a further 155 found trying to reach the coast of the neighbouring Region of Murcia.
As the authorities attempt to crack down on the criminal gangs organizing these illegal trips, officers in Andalucía have arrested 12 criminals so far this summer for captaining the immigrant boats.
