ARCHIVED - Almost all the evacuated Malaga residents can go back to their homes as wildfire stabilises
The forest fire near Estepona and Marbella is said to have “stabilised”, but is not yet “under control”

On the third day after the start of the forest fire in the Sierra Bermeja natural park, a lull in weather conditions has allowed most of those who had to be evacuated to return home.
The Town Hall of Benahavís has announced that It is now possible for people to return, with the exception of the urbanisation Montemayor Alto.
At 9.33 this morning, the fire was considered to have stabilised, but the Forest Fire Fighting Service of Andalucía (Infoca) has stated that this does not yet mean that the Malaga fire is under control.
“The fire is not yet over for us, we have not even reached the control phase,” said Infoca firefighting director, Juan Sánchez.

If successful, the fire could be downgraded to emergency level 0 (it is now at level 2) and the remaining residents who are still evacuated could return to their homes.

Early this morning, firefighter have been busy at work using the technique of ‘technical fire’ to fight the blaze. This basically consists of burning vegetation and other material that can serve as fuel for the fire, to prevent it from continuing to advance.
The aim is to at least maintain the fire in a stable state during the course of today, which would be a first step towards controlling it.
