Andalucía marks International Museum Day with more than 50 activities across the region
From talks and tours to workshops and concerts, museums and heritage sites will celebrate the 2026 theme, Museums Uniting a Divided World
Andalucía’s museums and cultural sites are getting ready to celebrate International Museum Day with a wide programme of more than fifty activities for all ages. This year’s event, held on and around May 18, comes under the theme Museums Uniting a Divided World, chosen to underline how museums can help bring people together across cultural, social and geopolitical differences. The activities begin on May 13 at the Museum of Almería, where the programme opens with a recital of traditional songs by older residents and pupils from CEIP Madre de la Luz. That will be followed by a guided visit focused on a Paleolithic stone fragment from the museum’s collection.
The museum will also offer tours for people with hearing disabilities, storytelling, dance and a brass band concert. As Patricia del Pozo, the regional Minister of Culture and Sport, put it, museums and heritage sites play a key role in “safeguarding heritage, while also offering society a space for learning and understanding.”
Elsewhere in Almería province, the Alcazaba will host a workshop on African songs led by José Azurmendi, along with a guided tour on the daily life of its former inhabitants. At the Villaricos Archaeological Site in Cuevas de Almanzora, visitors can take part in a workshop on how Roman toys were made from clay.
The programme continues across Andalucía. In Cádiz, the city museum will focus on archaeology and the region’s links between European and African cultures. Córdoba’s museums will offer themed visits, story-based tours and access to storage areas and restoration laboratories, while the C3A will open the studios of resident artists to the public. Granada’s museums will feature concerts, family workshops, dramatised tours and guided visits, including at the Alhambra Museum.
Other highlights include concerts at the Huelva Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville, goldsmithing workshops at Itálica, and theatrical tours at the Carmona Archaeological Site. In Málaga, the Museum of Málaga and the Antequera Dolmens will offer visits, virtual reality experiences and workshops, while Jaén, Linares, Úbeda and Cazorla will also join in with talks, concerts, tours and family activities.
With so much happening across the region, this year’s International Museum Day promises a lively and varied celebration of culture, heritage and community.
