Andalucia man jailed after his dog died of heatstroke locked in a car
The animal was left suffocating on a day when the thermometers in Jaén reached 42ºC
A 64-year-old man from the Jaén town of Cazorla has been sentenced to 6 months behind bars for leaving his dog locked in a car all day last July as the temperatures climbed into the 40s. The 25kg animal eventually succumbed to heatstroke and died.
Although the Prosecutor’s Office initially asked for a one-year sentence, the court took into account that the owner plead guilty and determined that his thoughtless actions were as a result of him being drunk at the time.
The court document summaries that on July 7, around noon, the accused "affected by the previous consumption of alcoholic beverages," left his car parked on the street "under the direct influence of the radiation from the sun" and "with absolute abandonment of his care obligations" left his dog "locked up until nightfall inside his vehicle."
The mercury reached a stifling 42ºC at the height of the day but despite this, the animal was abandoned without any type of ventilation or water.
Later that night, intoxicated, the man fell over on the road and was helped by Local Police officers, who noticed the dog inside the car. Sadly, the animal was already dead by the time the officers got to the vehicle.
New Animal Welfare laws implemented last year impose far harsher penalties for animal abuse and neglect, and the owner has been charged with causing the death of a domestic animal. As well as the custodial sentence, he is banned from owning pets or working with animals in any way for three years.
