ARCHIVED - Andalucia prepares for earthquakes, tidal waves, floods and tsunamis in October drills
Regional authorities are planning extensive emergency drills to test disaster response times
The Andalucian regional government is preparing a major regional emergency drill this October to test response times in the event of a catastrophe, according to Emergencias 112 Andalucía.
The unprecedented exercise, which has been codenamed ‘RespuestA 21’, will take place on October 19, 20 and 21 and will recreate three major emergency situations: a major earthquake in the eastern part of Andalucía (Almería, Granada and Málaga), a tidal wave in the Gulf of Cádiz (Cádiz and Huelva) and severe flooding in the provinces of the Guadalquivir Valley (Jaén, Córdoba and Seville).
This drill aims to test the emergency response mechanisms in the face of serious or particularly high-risk situations, and also includes a contingency plan for the risk of tsunamis in Andalucía.
The news comes just a week after storms caused severe damage to large parts of coastal Spain, and demonstrates an increased willingness to react to changing environmental and climate conditions.
