ARCHIVED - Andalusia entices UK visitors at London tourism fair
Britain expects travel to Andalucía to reach 2019 levels early next year
The tourism industry in Andalucía was given a major boost this week as several British agencies present at the World Travel Market (WTM) tourism fair in London confirmed that they expect the region to return to pre-pandemic levels of travellers in 2022. In order to meet the demand, Spanish delegates met with the main British airlines that operate connections to the south of Spain on Tuesday November 2 who expressed their confidence in recovering flights to the same number as in 2019.
To this end, the Secretary General for Tourism, Manuel Muñoz, pointed out that Jet2 plans to offer about 400,000 seats to Andalucía next year, operating “practically the same flights as before the pandemic.”
With the new routes, the airline will offer 58 weekly flights to Malaga and ten to Almeria from the UK, while discussions are ongoing about offering more connections with other airports in Andalucía.
The Ministry has also met with representatives of easyJet, who will increase the number of planes at their base in Malaga from two to five next year. A similar guarantee is expected from Ryanair following the Tourism Innovation Summit (TIS) in Sevilla next week.
According to data presented by the Association of British Travel Agencies (ABTA) at the conference, of the 62% of British people intending to travel abroad in 2022, about 29% of them plan to visit Spain.
Andalucía is a popular destination with Brits, typically receiving a quarter of all UK tourists who arrive in Spain. If the current trend continues and no new restrictions are introduced, the British agencies believe that Andalucía could welcome 1.2 million travellers from the UK in the first quarter of the year alone.
To solidify Andalucía’s relationship with the UK travel market, the annual conference of the consortium of independent travel agencies Elite Travel Group will be celebrated in Córdoba in September next year, receiving 150 delegates to the region. The conference will offer a unique opportunity to reinforce Andalucía as a destination of excellence.
