ARCHIVED - Andalusia reports 17 deaths and 2,590 new coronavirus cases: Covid update April 8
Despite the restrictions on travel in place during the Easter holidays in Andalucía, it appears that the virus has succeeded in spreading amongst the population again with hospitals gaining Covid patients by the day and incidence rates showing a decided upward motion.
2,590 new coronavirus cases and 17 deaths were reported in Andalusia on Wednesday, according to the latest figures from the regional health authorities released on Thursday 8 April. The 14-day incidence rate shot up 17.2 points from Wednesday and is now sitting at 180.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The number of new positive cases of Covid-19 rose significantly compared to the 1,767 reported on Wednesday and the 1,008 reported on Tuesday, while the number of deaths was considerably lower than the 38 reported on Wednesday and the 34 reported on Tuesday.
The burden on the health system continues to rise, with the region registering its sixth day in a row of increases in hospitalizations. There are currently 1,340 coronavirus patients in hospitals across Andalusia, six more than on Wednesday and 213 more than last Thursday, and 288 of them are in ICUs, three fewer than on Wednesday but 38 more than a week ago.
In spite of the rises, the regional authorities have decided that the measures currently in place are sufficient for the moment and have decided not to tighten restrictions again, trusting that with the holiday period out of the way, this current rise can be reversed.
