ARCHIVED - Andalusia begins giving third Covid jabs to immunosuppressed patients
13,678 patients in Andalucía are eligible for this extra dose
After the Spanish government announced that third Covid jabs would be given to immunosuppressed patients last week, the region of Andalucía began administering these doses almost immediately, on September 10.
This third dose, preferably the same make of vaccine as the first and second, will be administered to vulnerable members of the population, such as patients who have had organ transplants or who have had immunosuppressive treatment as a result of, or in preparation for, an organ transplant.
This latest vaccination drive comes even as some experts question whether a third dose of the Covid vaccine is necessary at all.
The third injection is also going to be given to patients who have received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, who could also receive a fourth dose depending on their treatment stage, and patients being treated with anti-CD20 drugs like rituximab, ofatumumab and veltuzumab.
In total, 13,678 immunosuppressed patients in Andalucía are eligible for the third Covid jab, which will be administered to those with an appointment in the usual vaccination centres.
According to the official regional update published on September 12, 86.1% of over-12s have received both doses (or one Janssen mono-dose), while 90.3% have had at least one vaccine, for a total of 6,730,544.
