ARCHIVED - Anonymous donor pays rent for homeless Granada family for a year
The Andalucía family now have a place to live after sleeping in their car for two months
In an extraordinary show of solidarity, a woman has offered to pay a full year’s rent and electricity bills for a local Granada family who were left homeless after losing their business during the coronavirus pandemic.
The family of four from Armilla had been sleeping in their car for over two months and, after learning of the case through social media, a foreign resident, who has chosen to remain anonymous, generously decided to provide the family with a place to live for the next year.
Covid restrictions and lockdowns are the cause of this family’s economic difficulties, as the bar that they owned was forced to close for prolonged periods of time, leading them to lose their house and, less than a year later, their bar.
A charitable organization, the Gran Familia Womens’ Association, has been providing food for the family for some time and will continue to do so until they are “back on their feet”, said a representative from the association.
The family were given the key to their new two-bedroom flat in an emotional handover on Thursday September 10 and now they are focused on finding employment. The eldest son, aged 23, has been the first to succeed as he was recently offered an full-time contract in a tea shop.
Unfortunately, this family is not alone and many other local residents and families have also suffered economic hardship at the hands of the pandemic. The Gran Familia Womens’ Association continues to feed 50 families per week and have recently rehomed another Armilla resident who was left homeless.
