ARCHIVED - Anti-Covid drones to monitor Mijas beaches this summer
Three drones will provide live occupancy data from the beaches in Mijas, in the province of Málaga in Andalucía

The local council in Mijas will be using three drones to calculate beach occupancy levels as well as ten ‘controllers’ or monitors to enforce the mandatory 1.5 metre distance between the towels of different groups.
These measures will be in addition to the normal lifeguarding and safety services provided and will aim to make the beaches as safe and Covid-free as possible this summer.
The three drones will be flown over the Mijas coast while monitoring the occupancy of each beach and the data collected by the devices can be consulted on the municipal webpage www.mijas.com, where the occupancy percentage of each beach will be displayed so that people can check which is the least (or most) busy beach before setting off.
In addition, ten monitors will patrol the beaches to make sure that no one is breaking the 1.5 metre social distancing rule.
The council has also installed 65 hand-sanitizing dispensers along the coast and has boosted the cleaning and disinfection protocols on the beaches and toilets.
While the authorities in Mijas are using drones to the benefit of the population, others have been caught using drones with some less well-meaning intentions in Málaga, where the police recently seized a drug smuggling drone.
