ARCHIVED - Festival of the Patios de Cordoba returns to Andalucia in May
The festivities will kick off with the iconic Battle of the Flowers parade in Cordoba
The Patios de Cordoba festival returns to Andalucía this month, filling the city with colourful blooms, and the 12-day event kicks off with the Battle of the Flowers on Monday May 2, a stunning parade that will wind its way around Victory Gardens, following a route first devised in the 1990s.
The tradition of the Battle of the Flowers originated in 1915 when the first parade took place in Cordoba to welcome spring, and this year no fewer than 14 floats will take part, strewing the streets with 80,000 fragrant carnations.
The Battle inaugurates the wider Patios de Cordoba, which will run this year from May 3 to May 15. The event celebrates the art of elaborately decorating outdoor areas with countless colourful flowers and plants and a total of 59 venues will take part in the 2022 Festival.
Spectators can visit any of the patios for free between 11am and 2pm, and between 6pm and 10pm except for the final Sunday, when they will close at 8.30pm.
The competition will feature 19 different copla, theatre and musical and poetic performances between May 5 and 11 this year, and seven concerts will be held at the Fuenseca Cinema.
The Delicias Cinema will feature the Centenary of the Patios exhibition, while the ‘Crossing the River’ Flamenco Festival will be held next to La Calahorro.
The 52 competing patios will be divided into six routes throughout the Historic Centre of Cordoba, while seven others that are not part of the contest will be situated at: Plaza de Ramon y Cajal; Pompeyos, 6; Jerónimo Páez Square; Barter, 4; Samuel de los Santos Gener, 9; Plaza de Don Gome; and Plaza del Potro, 1.
The City Council has launched an interactive website where you can find all the details of the 2022 contest along with the routes and available services.
