ARCHIVED - French man walks the Camino de Santiago with 11 animals in tow
The pilgrim was stopped in La Rioja with goats, donkeys and a pet dog
Officers from the Guardia Civil and the Local Police of Santo Domingo de La Calzada in La Rioja in Spain came upon an unusual sight when they were alerted about a man walking along the Camino de Santiago with quite a collection of animals in tow.
The Camino de Santiago is a very popular hiking trail frequented by walkers and cyclists on their way to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia in northwestern Spain.
Agents from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) were called to the scene to examine the animals and found that the traveller, a French citizen, was in possession of seven goats, three donkeys and a dog. In addition to the pilgrim being unable to produce any legal documentation for the animals, the agents concluded they were missing microchips and ear tags as required by law.
A notice was sent to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of the Government of La Rioja, and all of the animals were transferred to a temporary enclosure owned by a private individual. The French man was given 48 hours to produce the required documentation in order to continue his trip with the animals.
