ARCHIVED - Malaga fire could have been started intentionally
Authorities in Andalucía have began investigating the cause of the Sierra Bermeja wildfire
Authorities believe that the incredibly destructive forest fire in the province of Málaga, which has burnt through almost 10,000 hectares of land, may have been set intentionally.
The fire began on Wednesday September 8 and was proving to be uncontainable until this Monday, when rain reached the west of Málaga and the fire was finally declared under control.
Now, the authorities have turned their attention to the source of the Sierra Bermeja fire and several clues point toward the fire being intentional, although no suspects have been identified yet.
The fire was started almost simultaneously in two different points near rural vehicle parking areas far away from any main roads, meaning that identifying the arsonist, or arsonists, will be made more difficult by the lack of witnesses.
If the blaze was set on purpose, the culprit, or culprits, would be responsible for the destruction of over 9,000 hectares of land, including three naturally protected areas (Sierra Bermeja y Real, Valle del Río Genal and Paraje Natural de Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja), the death of countless animals and one firefighter, as well as causing thousands of residents to be evacuated from their homes.
