ARCHIVED - More than 2,000 earthquakes registered along Granada Santa Fe fault in recent months

Minor earthquakes have been constantly occurring in the Andalusian region, though most are too small for people to notice.

The earth continues to move for people in Granada, with another 2.8 magnitude tremor registered at 4.19 pm on Tuesday (2 March). With its epicentre in Santa Fe, the latest tremor - the second of the day and the eighth of the week, as there were six on Monday - was felt by people in the provincial capital city and other nearby areas such as Vegas del Genil, Cúllar Vega, Albolote, Armilla and Macarena.

People in the region remain uneasy as memories remain fresh in their minds of the panic that they felt a little over a month ago when earthquakes began to shake their homes in quick succession. Many took to the streets and some families decided to sleep in their cars for fear that their ceilings or walls could come down on them during the night.

There have been more than 2,000 earthquakes in the swarm that re-awakened towards the end of January, according to data from the National Geography Institute (IGN), the majority of them with epicentres in Atarfe and Santa Fe. An IGN report published last week revealed that there had been a total of 2102 earthquakes in the area since 1 December 2020, 33 of them with a magnitude of 3.0 or more, and 190 of them felt by members of the public.
