ARCHIVED - Murder investigation launched over British father and son missing from Costa del Sol
The pair vanished from Estepona, near Malaga, in 2019
A double murder probe has been opened in Spain three years after a West Sussex father and son disappeared without a trace while house hunting in the Costa del Sol.
Daniel Poole, 46, and his 22-year-old son Liam, from Burgess Hill, travelled to Estepona, near Malaga, in April 2019 to look for a holiday home. Just one day after checking into the exclusive Ona Valle Romano Golf & Resort, the pair vanished.
Daniel was reportedly carrying 20,000 pounds in his suitcase, which has never been found, although both of their passports and all of their clothes were left in the hotel room. Their rental car, a grey Peugeot 308, was never returned to the hire company.
A huge search was launched at the time by the Spanish and British police, but no sightings of the father and son were ever reported.
Learning that a murder investigation has finally been opened, Daniel’s daughter Lauryn Poole, 23, told the press in the UK: “There was hope there but now it’s gone. It’s brought on a whole new level of grief, and I’ve really struggled to accept it.”
Liam’s mother and Daniel’s ex-wife Lisa Berwick, 46, added: “I knew it from the start but it still hurts to hear it.”
When the pair, who have been linked to several drugs gangs as well as one of Britain’s most wanted men, Kevin Parle, disappeared three years ago, detectives in the UK immediately believed that they “may have come to harm”.
In fact, investigator Peter Bleksley claimed at the time that a confidential informant had confirmed Parle’s involvement in the disappearances.
“The source said they weren’t implicating Parle directly, but told me that ‘the father and son from Burgess Hill won’t be seen again’.
“I later met my source face-to-face and discussed Danny and Liam. The source told me the criminal network surrounding Kevin Parle was responsible for their disappearance.”
