ARCHIVED - PP wins landslide victory in Andalusia to govern solo for the next 4 years
The conservative party continues in power after winning a convincing majority in elections that are a sign of things to come nationally
The conservative PP party in Andalucía has won the regional elections this weekend by a landslide, gaining an unprecedented absolute majority and earning the right to govern on their own – outside of any coalition – for the next four years.
While the PP party in Andalucía, headed by Juanma Moreno (pictured), was already in charge of the regional assembly, they have trounced the competition by winning in all eight provinces, something that has never been done before.
The party got twice the number of votes they received in the last election and got a total of 58 seats in the regional parliament, in comparison with 30 for the socialist PSOE – which had its worst performance ever – and 14 seats for third-place Vox – who miss out on their chance to govern in an alliance with PP as happened in the recent elections in Castilla-León.
Andalucía is a traditionally left-leaning region of Spain, but it seems the confidence in the socialist PSOE party has been undermined by rising inflation and economic downturn recently.
The results of this local election were being very carefully scrutinised by political analysts in Spain as it is thought the outcome will reflect what will happen in the next general election for the whole of Spain, which is due to take place in November 2023.
The next municipal elections will be in May 2023.
