ARCHIVED - Shooting in Marbella nightclub Opium leaves Irish victim
Dutch national may be behind Malaga club shooting, which has left five injured, including Irishman
Five people were injured early this morning after a shooting in a club in Marbella, Malaga on the Costa del Sol.
Of those injured in the Opium Beach Club Marbella, located on the popular promenade of the Spanish holiday resort, four people were shot, including one Irishman, and one of them is in serious condition in hospital.
Another man, the alleged perpetrator of the shooting, allegedly a Dutch national according to the latest reports, has stab wounds to the chest and head, and is also in serious condition.
The first distress call received by 112 emergency services came at 1.10am, with the caller warning that shots had been heard and that people had run out of the Opium nightclub, which is located at kilometre 184 of the A-7 road.
The National Police force was alerted to the incident and arrested the injured shooter, who is now in police custody while being treated for his wounds.
Club Opium is popular with foreign nationals in Marbella, and Dutch Love Island contestant and influencer Kelly van der Minne and Froilán de Marichalar, nephew to the King of Spain, were apparently at the club at the time of the shooting.
Videos posted on social media show the moments of panic experienced by the nightclub’s customers in the wake of the tragedy, as they fled the club as soon as the first shots were heard.

In one of the videos, two groups of young men are seen arguing in what appears to be the VIP area of the nightclub. One of the men picks up a large bottle and others take off their T-shirts to start the fight. Shortly after, the first shot is heard and people start shouting and running away.
In other videos posted, people are seen throwing themselves to the ground to try to dodge the shots and running for their lives to try to get out of the club, while some have attributed the shooting to drug-related gang violence.
