ARCHIVED - Three of the most heavily fined radars in Spain located in Andalusia
There are 2,640 traffic cameras in Spain and the number is expected to grow by 10% this year
The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has made no secret of the fact that it intends to crack down heavily on speeding and other dangerous infractions this year in an attempt to reduce the unacceptable number of road accidents and fatalities across Spain.
According to the Coyote company, which gathers traffic information in several European countries, there are now 2,640 radars dotted around the country, used to monitor not just speed, but also correct seatbelt use and mobile phones, and this figure is expected to grow by 10% by the end of 2023.
Of the total number, 337 of these radars are located in Andalucía, and of the 10 which generate the most fines in the entire country, three are located in this community.

In the top 10 list, Andalucía’s three sanction-claiming radars are followed by the Valencian Community (two), Catalonia (two), Madrid, the Region on Murcia and Cuenca (one each). According to Destre, in 2019, 438 million euros was collected through speeding traps alone.
Of the 2,640 radars that have been installed across Spain by the DGT, 231 are designed to monitor seatbelts and mobile phones, 391 watch traffic lights, 159 record stretches of road while the remaining 1,877 are fixed.
Catalonia has by far the most traffic radars, with 660, followed a long way behind by Andalucía, Castilla y Leon (319) and Madrid (203).
