ARCHIVED - Tourist spending by Brits, Germans and French in Spain exceeds pre-pandemic levels
British tourists made up the majority of visitors to Spain in March, followed by Germany and France
In the month of March alone, before the Easter holiday and long before the summer season kicks in, 4 million tourists arrived in Spain, which is just 29% lower than the same period in 2019, before the pandemic erupted. And despite the fact that the numbers are lower, they still spent more than they did two years ago: each foreign tourist unloaded an average of 1,257 euros during their stay, almost 200 euros more than in March 2019.
Even so, total spending remains 15% below 2019 levels, but has already exceeded 5 billion. With respect to last year, it’s a whopping 830% higher, although of course Spain at the time was still at the height of the Covid health crisis and many countries still had strict travel restrictions in place.
The Minister of Tourism, Reyes Maroto, explained in a statement that this trend “makes us optimistic” that travel to Spain will “intensify” in the summer period, and airlines like Ryanair are already bumping up their high-season flights; in all, there are more than 29 million seats scheduled on international flights between April and June.
Since travel regulations have been eased, British tourists have begun flocking back to Spain, and of the 4 million travellers who arrived in March, UK passengers represented 18% of the total, the clear majority. In all, 826,400 British tourists landed in Spain in this one month and spent 1,013 million euros, 20% of the total international income.
After Britons, the next most frequent travellers have been the Germans (608,800) and French (457,000). Among the rest of the countries, the growth compared to last year in Ireland (+2,500%), the United States (1,900%) and the Nordic countries (1,300%) stand out.
The most popular hot spot for tourists was undoubtedly the Canary Islands, accounting for 33% of all spending, followed by Andalucía (15%) and Catalonia (14.5%).
