The 27-year-old suspect, of North African origin, was detained by National Police officers following an investigation into the tragic incident, which took place in the city centre on January 21, 2025.
The arrest was made on January 31, and the suspect was brought before the courts. He has since been remanded in prison due to his alleged involvement in the killing of the Boston-based priest.
Father Richard Gross, 80, was found dead in his tourist accommodation on Calle Viento. His body showed clear signs of violence, and investigators believe he was attacked as soon as he entered the flat. His belongings, including a rucksack and a suitcase containing his documents, were stolen.
Autopsy results confirmed that Father Gross died of asphyxiation, with evidence suggesting he was likely killed using a chokehold. Police suspect more than one person may have been involved in the attack.
Originally from Wrentham, Massachusetts, Father Richard Gross was a well-respected and much-loved member of the Jesuit community. Ordained in 1976, he dedicated his life to education and pastoral work, serving as a religion teacher, spiritual advisor and chaplain in several institutions. His career included positions at Boston College High School, Phillips Academy in Andover, the University of Connecticut at Storrs, and Vanderbilt and LaSalle Universities.
At the time of his death, Father Gross was residing at Boston College High School, where he had returned in 2023 to continue his ministry. The Jesuit community has expressed deep sorrow over his loss, releasing a statement that reads: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Father Gross’s family, his Jesuit brothers and all those blessed by his ministry and friendship. We pray for his eternal peace and for the comfort of those who mourn his loss.”
Father Gross is survived by three sisters and was preceded in death by a brother. His tragic death has left a profound impact on his community, both in the United States and abroad, as friends and colleagues remember his kindness, dedication and unwavering faith.
While an arrest has been made, police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, seeking to determine whether others were involved. The case has drawn significant attention, as it highlights the dangers posed by violent crime, even in popular tourist destinations. Authorities are working to ensure that justice is served for Father Gross and his loved ones.
