Beaches are set to improve dramatically along the entire Costa del Sol
This week, work has begun on the popular Andalucía beaches in order to get them into optimum condition for next summer
A large-scale operation has begun along the Costa del Sol to make major improvements to its beaches. The Spanish government has committed to the work following the two major storms that hit the coast in recent weeks.
The storms have carried tonnes of reeds and debris onto the beaches. Cleaning work has now begun in order to give the beaches a fresh lease of life and a clean appearance.
The total investment that is to go into the work is around 2.1 million euros. The works began in La Malagueta in Málaga city and are set to continue as more and more beaches are worked upon in the coming weeks.
A total of 1.3 million euros will be allocated to the western Costa del Sol, covering the municipalities of Manilva, Casares, Estepona, Marbella, Mijas, Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Torremolinos.
Meanwhile, 800,000 euros will go to the eastern coast, covering the municipalities of Malaga, Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo, Torrox and Nerja.
The investment represents a record for the area for this type of work. This large investment is because the region wishes to maintain the high level of quality that Costa del Sol beaches are known to have.
All the actions have been agreed with the town councils of the affected municipalities and will be carried out gradually with the work being finished around April time so that the beaches are ready for the following summer.
The work involved includes sand compensation work that looks to equally distribute sand across beaches on the coast especially in areas that have been most heavily affected by erosion during the storms.
