For the first time in its history, Benalmádena will have a smoke-free beach this summer. Playa Bonita has been selected as the designated area where smoking will be officially prohibited as part of the town’s efforts to promote healthier habits and reduce pollution.

 

The announcement was made by Councillor Presi Aguilera, who confirmed that the measure is part of the municipality’s commitment to the Andalusia Comprehensive Tobacco Control Plan. The plan encourages local councils to raise awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco and to take meaningful steps to prevent smoking in shared public spaces.

 

“It’s great news that we’re a benchmark municipality for also having a smoke-free beach,” said Aguilera. “It’s very important for Benalmádena to be part of this project, part of the Andalusian Network of Health Services and Smoke-Free Spaces.”

 

The council’s initiative focuses on clearly marking out a specific beach area where smoking is not allowed, helping to protect the health of both residents and visitors. The goal, Aguilera explained, is not only to encourage healthier lifestyles but also to reduce environmental damage caused by cigarette butts and smoke.

 

Benalmádena thus continues to set an example of its commitment to the health and well-being of its residents and visitors,” Aguilera added.

 

Playa Bonita will now be a dedicated space free from cigarette smoke, a move that places Benalmádena alongside a growing number of destinations aiming to offer cleaner and more pleasant beach experiences.

 

The pilot project will run throughout the summer and is intended to support a cleaner coastline, reduce second-hand smoke exposure, and encourage people to make more conscious choices when it comes to smoking in public.
