Brit, 20, dies in horror plunge while climbing near Malaga
A helicopter was sent by the civil guard in an attempt to rescue the man, but the efforts proved unsuccessful
A 20-year-old British man has died in a horrific plunge while climbing in Spain, on a famous path called the ‘Monkey Bridge’. The hike, which is considered to be dangerous, is about 70 kilometres inland from Malaga.
The man tragically fell on Wednesday December 11 at 11am on the part of the hike named the 'Monkey Bridge'. Upon falling the man was knocked unconscious while he was on the path with his companions. The people who were with him at the time called the emergency services.
The Guardia Civil of Spain sent a mountain rescue team via a helicopter to the scene. On arrival however, the man was found to have died and the paramedics could not revive him.
The British man had been climbing using steel fixtures, wires and ladders bolted to the rock face. The Caminito Del Rey is a famous climbing path known as one of the world's scariest hikes. This is because the walkways are built around steep cliffs and high wire walks that only the bravest adventurers take on.
The wooden trail is five miles long and bolted into the cliff face of a hydroelectric gorge. The path was originally created to help workers get to work in the El Chorro power station. The path was built all the way back in 1905, before being refurbished in 2015.
At certain sections, the drop off the rock face is up to 700 metres deep, and at other sections tourists can see where people once lived in the gorge.
