British man bludgeoned to death with hoe by neighbour in Andalucía
The Briton was attacked while out walking his dog in the Almeria town of Zurgena
A dispute between neighbours has come to a grisly and tragic end in the small town of Zurgena in Almeria, as a British man has lost his life following a violent assault. The incident has left the quiet community reeling and shocked by the brutal nature of the crime.
The unnamed British man was reportedly walking his dog near his home on August 12 when a dispute arose with his Spanish neighbour. The neighbour, upset by the presence of the dog near his property, allegedly ran out of his house and attacked the man with a garden hoe, repeatedly striking him over the head.
It’s unclear at the moment whether the Briton resides permanently in the Andalucía town or if he was on holiday there.
Severely injured and bleeding, the victim was rushed to La Inmaculada Hospital in Huercal-Overa, a 20-minute drive from Zurgena. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the man succumbed to his head injuries and passed away a few days later.
Authorities wasted no time in responding to this heinous attack and the neighbour was arrested almost immediately. He was initially facing charges of attempted homicide but since his victim has died, the charges have been upgraded to murder.
A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil confirmed this week that the incident has been “clarified.”
He added: “It is now a matter for the courts which have launched an ongoing investigation.”
Zurgena, a usually sleepy town with a population of just under 3,000, is located in the picturesque Almanzora valley, close to popular tourist resorts like Mojacar and Vera. The incident has left the tight-knit community shaken, and many are struggling to come to terms with the senseless act of violence.
Earlier this week, a 19-year-old woman from the UK plummeted to her death from a sixth-floor hotel balcony in Ibiza. The victim was holidaying in Sant Antoni when the tragic accident occurred at around 3am on Tuesday August 20.
Initial reports from the investigation opened by the Guardia Civil indicate that the young woman may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of her fall.
