ARCHIVED - British cyclist, 69, killed in Almeria hit and run
The driver fled the scene without stopping in the municipality of Turre
A 69-year-old British man has died after being knocked off his bicycle by a car on Sunday April 16 in the municipality of Turre, close to Almeria. The motorist failed to stop to help his victim and instead fled the scene.
The hit and run occurred near the local fire station on the AL-6113 road at 10.30am and emergency workers were quickly on hand; however, despite their best efforts, the Briton died of his injuries a short time later.
Sources from Spain’s Guardia Civil confirmed that the driver was tracked down on Monday April 17 and was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He went before a judge and was released on bail pending further investigation.
No additional details have been released about the identity of the cyclist and it’s not yet clear whether he lived in the Andalucía province or was visiting on holiday. It’s understood he was biking alone at the time of the accident.
