British father dies after late-night fall from hotel balcony in Torremolinos
The 37-year-old had been on a family holiday in the Costa del Sol ahead of the anniversary of his baby daughter’s death
A British father has died after falling from a hotel balcony in Torremolinos while on holiday with his fiancée and children.Robert Davidson, 37, was staying with his partner Daniella Robb and their two children at the four-star Sandos Griego hotel when the tragedy happened late on Tuesday February 3. Emergency services, including the Policía Nacional, were called to the scene shortly after 11pm but Mr Davidson was pronounced dead at the hotel.
The family had travelled to the Costa del Sol from the UK on Sunday February 1 to spend time away from home ahead of a painful anniversary. Their baby daughter Hollie died one year earlier at just seven weeks old from sudden infant death syndrome.
Daniella, 27, said the evening had seemed normal. The couple’s children had been at the hotel’s night entertainment while Robert chatted with other British holidaymakers at the bar. “It was getting late so I took the kids to bed first,” she said. “He came into the room, gave both kids a kiss and told them he loved them. Then he went out on the balcony for a cigarette.” Moments later, the family awoke to screams and discovered he had fallen.
Police are investigating what happened, and it has not yet been confirmed whether the fall was accidental.
Daniella described how Robert had been struggling emotionally in recent months. He had suffered a serious head injury on Christmas Eve that left him with a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain. “Robert was really struggling,” she said. “We had been to the doctors, and I had asked him to go back. He didn’t like to talk about his feelings much. He had been devastated at losing Hollie. We still were.”
She said Robert had been due to begin a new telecommunications job the following week and hoped it might help him move forward.
The family are now preparing to return home, supported by friends and a GoFundMe page set up to help bring Robert’s body back to the UK. It has already raised more than £10,000.
“We all loved him so much,” said Daniella. “He was hilarious, he could walk into a room and light it up. He was the most loving person. We are utterly heartbroken.”
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office confirmed they are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
