British fugitive extradited following arrest in Marbella
The Leeds gunrunner fled to the Costa del Sol after being released on bail
Another successful collaboration between the Spanish and British authorities has resulted in the capture and subsequent extradition of a dangerous fugitive from the Costa del Sol. Leeds man Clinton Blakey, 38, was arrested in Marbella on May 17 and shipped back to England on Thursday June 8, where he was charged with conspiracy to supply Class A and B drugs.
He was remanded in custody by Leeds Magistrates Court to serve the remainder of an eight-year jail sentence for a separate drugs offence.
Blakey’s rap sheet is extensive and he fled the UK back in 2020 before standing trial for trafficking guns and ammunition. He was arrested in Madrid the following year but again went on the missing list as soon as he was released on bail. According to the National Crime Agency, he was tracked to Marbella last month and arrested.
Nigel Coles, NCA Operations Manager, said: “Blakey was arrested after an intelligence led operation between the NCA and Spanish National Police Organised Crime Fugitive Team.
“Following an intense period of research and surveillance he was detained in a vehicle in Marbella and transported back to the UK.
“Firearms and the supply of Class A drugs are inextricably linked and are often the cause of violence and exploitation in communities.
“Ensuring they are taken out of circulation and those associated with their use face the consequences of their actions are crucial to our work protecting the public.”
The fugitive was initially arrested in the UK around the same time as ex-Leeds United full-back Paul Shepherd was convicted of firearms offences. As a result, Operation Venetic was launched and Blakey was linked to a criminal gang involved in gunrunning between Liverpool and Leeds.
Shepherd is currently awaiting sentencing for his crimes after a Glock semi-automatic, a Howa bolt-action rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition were discovered at his home.
