ARCHIVED - Cabo de Gata residents protest over drunken tourism
Locals claim the Almeria town has been turned into “a dump” by lawless holidaymakers

More than 200 residents from Las Negras in Níjar took to the streets on Sunday August 28 to protest against “drunken tourism” which they claim has degenerated the picturesque Almeria town. Located in the heart of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar natural park, locals believe that an influx of “bachelor parties, uncontrolled parties” and an anything goes attitude have caused untold problems of public disorder and noise pollution.
Marina Barber, president of the Las Negras neighbourhood association, explained that the demonstration was aimed at provoking “a change in the tourist model” of the seafront town to ensure that it is not promoted as “a place without laws.”
Local residents are fed up with “hygiene problems, drunkenness, fights, cars, noise,” she added, and has called on the Níjar City Council to come up with some solutions.
What was once a paradise has turned into “a dump”, according to the locals, who are demanding better cleaning services, more rubbish bins and tougher consequences for drunk and disorderly behaviour.
The residents have also asked the council to carry out extensive repairs to the promenade, including adding new benches, railings and trees and plants to provide shade in the summer. Two years ago, 170,000 euros was allocated to the project but the neighbourhood associations believe the current plans to be “nonsense that does not respond to the needs of the people.”
The groups also want harsher penalties for camper vans that park in unauthorised spots, as well as for business that stay open after hours or exceed the allowed noise level.
“On the beach we want to listen to the waves, as it has always been, not the music of the clubs,” the protesters concluded.
