Cadiz bomb squad called in after tourist finds unexploded missile on the beach
The rusted, old projectile had to be neutralised on the cliffs of the Parque Natural La Breña in Barbate
An Explosives Disposal Team of the Diving Unit of Cádiz (UNBUDIZ), belonging to the Maritime Action Force Units in Cádiz, located, identified and neutralised a 105mm calibre projectile found on the cliff of the La Breña Natural Park, in the town of Barbate, Cádiz on Thursday January 11.
The device was located by a tourist to the area, who alerted the Guardia Civil. A group of specialists were then sent to investigate and dispose of the missile.
They found that it was located in a rocky area that was difficult to access, so they proceeded to move it to a safer area for neutralisation, also creating a security perimeter.
They exploded the bomb securely, then collected the remains to check that there were no more explosive remnants in the area in order to avoid any type of environmental impact.
Handling these types of projectiles is very dangerous, as the explosive charges tend to remain in perfect condition despite the passage of time, which is why it is recommended that in the event of any discovery, it should not be handled and that the authorities should be notified.
This is the first explosive device neutralised by the Cádiz Diving Unit’s deactivation team on the Cádiz coast so far this year.
The Navy’s Diving Units have personnel specialised in explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and divers specialised in underwater mine disabling techniques (EOD-Sub).
