ARCHIVED - Cadiz invests more than 260k to clear beaches of seaweed
The invasive algae will be removed from the shores of Tarifa, Algeciras, Barbate and La Línea
For the second year running, Cadiz Council has invested hundreds of thousands of euros to rid the municipality’s beaches of the smelly and unsightly Rugulopterix okamurae algae, an Asian seaweed whose invasion is seriously threatening the biodiversity of the coast.
The fishing sector has already felt its impact this year due to the disappearance of native species that have been displaced by the invasive algae, and tourists have begun avoiding the affected beaches, which are overrun.
Quite aside from being an eyesore and producing a pungent odour, the slimy seaweed actually poses a public health risk, as the putrefaction of the decomposing organic matter draws all manner of pests. For this very reason, the coastal municipalities have no choice but to dig into their budgets to fund the removal of the algae.
To help with the enormous cost, the Ecological Transition and Sustainable Urban Development Area will grant 261,925.94 euros in aid to Tarifa, La Línea de la Concepción, Barbate and Algeciras.
Each coastal area has submitted an estimate of the price, including beach cleaning and the removal of seaweed, the rental or purchase of machinery and the disposal of the algae.
Taking these and other factors into account, Tarifa will receive 103,925.94 euros; Barbate 60,000 euros; La Línea 73,000 and Algeciras, 25,000 euros.
