ARCHIVED - Cadiz metal workers strike: negotiations stop and protests continue
Communication breaks down between companies and unions as the demonstrations carry on across Cádiz province
The eighth day of the metal sector strike in Cádiz began this morning, Tuesday November 23, without any serious incidents so far, after one man sadly died yesterday when his motorbike crashed into a lorry parked on the picket lines.
At the negotiating table
While employers in the metal sector and the unions representing the striking workers both walked away from the negotiating table without reaching an agreement this morning, there are predictions that the next two days could be key as the metal companies fear that after the tenth day of stoppages clients will start to cancel their contracts.
This may force the employers’ hand and mean they have to make a deal or risk losing precious business contracts.
On the streets
Meanwhile, the strikes on the streets continue and demonstrators are still blocking access to workplaces like shipyards, foundries and factories. In the town of San Fernando in the Bay of Cádiz, a stone was thrown at a bus carrying Navantia employees to the shipyards this morning, but although the rear window was smashed, no injuries were reported.
In response to the escalating situation, police have started using armoured tanks that used to belong to the army to clear barricades of debris from the roads.
El Gobierno es propietario de Navantia, parte de Alestis y de Airbus, es responsable de gran parte de la carga de trabajo y de la inspección laboral que permite jornadas de 12 hs de lunes a domingo.
