ARCHIVED - Cadiz metal workers strike over pay dispute
Staff intend to go on indefinite strike in Andalucía on November 16
Workers in the metal sector in the Andalucía municipality of Cádiz went on strike on Tuesday November 9 with the view to staging another protest involving 95% of the industry’s staff members. The action included roadblocks and barricades in some areas of the province, mainly in industrial estates and on Avenida de Astilleros in the capital of Cádiz.
The unions have announced two days of strikes this week, Tuesday and Wednesday, before stopping work indefinitely on November 16, since an agreement still hasn’t been reached between employers and unions in Sercla after the original contract expired on December 31 2020.
The main bone of contention is the salary of metal workers, which the unions claim should increase by 2% in 2021, 2.5% next year and 3% in 2023, subject to revision if the annual Real Consumer Price Index (CPI) is higher. Employers have flatly refused these raises, and consequently a huge protest was mounted on Wednesday morning from the shipyards to the headquarters of the employer’s association.
