ARCHIVED - Cadiz tram finally opens after 16 years of delays
The long-awaited tram represents a “historical landmark” for Andalucia

Finally concluding works that have lasted almost two decades, the TramBahía was inaugurated in Cádiz on Wednesday October 26. It will be the first train-tram in Spain to circulate on the newly built tracks between the towns of Chiclana and San Fernando in the province of Cádiz.
With a route 24 kilometres long and 21 stations and stops, the tram will service 234,000 inhabitants by connecting the municipalities of Chiclana de la Frontera, San Fernando, Puerto Real and Cádiz.
Sharing several photos of the event on Twitter, the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, described that TramBahía as a “historical landmark” that reaffirms the government’s commitment to “sustainable mobility”.
✅ Compromiso cumplido. El #TramBahía de Cádiz ya conecta la ciudad con Puerto Real, San Fernando y Chiclana en una hora. El primer tren-tranvía de España es una realidad tras 16 años de espera.

Work on the TramBahía originally began in 2006 but was interrupted by budget problems and the lack of initial coordination with the Ministry of Transport and its public companies, ADIF, Renfe and the State Railway Safety Agency (AESF), which caused countless stoppages.
By January 2019, however, the operation was well underway: the connection between the railway tracks and the newly built platform in Río Arillo was completed and the Polígono del Tiro Janer substation was built. Telecommunications systems were implemented and, thanks to renewed agreements ADIF, Renfe and AESF, the long-promised Cádiz tram became a reality.
