ARCHIVED - Cancer charity launches province-wide campaign as diagnoses rise in Malaga
More than 56,000 cancer diagnoses are forecast in Andalucia in 2030, with almost 12,000 of those in Malaga province

Despite ground-breaking cancer research, more than 9,800 people were diagnosed with the disease last year in Malaga province, and the figure is expected to rise in 2030.
This is according to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), which is behind a World Cancer Day (February 4) campaign in the Andalucian province to reduce these startling figures and increase survival rates.
The association attributes the 2022 data to "the ageing of the population, unhealthy habits and polluting factors" and has forecast 330,000 cancer diagnoses in Spain in 2030, 56,328 of these in Andalusia and 11,699 in Malaga province.
However, oncologists insist that survival is also increasing due to early diagnosis and better treatments.
In the run-up to Saturday, World Cancer Day, the AECC is organising various awareness-raising events across Malaga.
The organisation's provincial HQ and its 13 local offices - Estepona, Marbella, Fuengirola-Mijas, Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox, Nerja, Antequera, Ronda, Álora, Alhaurín de la Torre and Coín - will be setting up more than 50 information tables between Thursday and Saturday to bring the "All Against Cancer" campaign to the people of Malaga.
At the main tables in each municipality the manifesto will be read by a cancer patient and the most emblematic buildings will be lit up in green, such as the Town Halls of Malaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola.
On Friday, ahead of a football match between Malaga C.F and Real Oviedo at La Rosaleda, AECC volunteers will take to the pitch with a banner commemorating World Cancer Day, accompanied by the team mascot, to symbolise the club's support.
At half-time, AECC's Provincial President for Malaga, Joaquín Morales will present the association's badge to a representative of the cub, as a thank you for joining the 'Todos Contra el Cáncer' campaign.
Meanwhile, the Coín branch of the association will be the starting point for a fundraising venture by cancer patient Salvador Jiménez Luna whose leg was amputated as a result of osteosarcoma. He has decided to undertake a solidarity challenge to raise cash for the Spanish Association Against Cancer.
On Saturday he will embark on a 200 km cycle, climbing six peaks in the province, with a difference in altitude of 4,000 metres. Each mountain pass symbolises the fight against a type of cancer - sarcoma, lymphoma, breast, childhood cancer, leukaemia and pancreatic cancer.
At the top of each one of these peaks, the proceeds raised by the local branches through the support of companies and individuals will be handed over.
At 6pm, there will be a reception at the Coín AECC branch.
Donations can be made through BIZUM 06491 or using the account ES94 0049 0345 3523 1135 0138.
