Caravaca Town Council restores old washhouse in the Navares and Singla districts
Works to restore the old public laundry house is underway
The Caravaca de la Cruz Town Council has started restoration work on the traditional washouses discovered in the districts of Navares and Singla.
Through the renovations the council wishes to create meeting places for residents once again, and the historic buildings will be soon accompanied by paving and landscaping work on the exteriors.
The mayor, José Francisco García, said, “We thought it was very interesting to highlight these places that once served a social and cultural purpose and are very visible within the rural urban centres themselves.”
The aim of the project is to stop the deterioration of these simple single-storey buildings, located on the irrigation ditches and equipped with washing basins.
The work consists mainly of replacing the current fibre cement roofs, repairing damage due to damp, adding new coverings and enclosures, and landscaping the exteriors.
Last year, similar work was carried out on the exteriors of laundries located in La Almudema, Los Prados, Singla, El Moralejo, Los Royos, Navares and Benablón .
The restoration work has a budget of 31,000 euros. The financing comes from both the FEDER fund and the Autonomous Community, under the ‘Paisea’ line of aid for the recovery of heritage and landscape of the Rural Development Programme.
