ARCHIVED - Cartagena University students print 3D protector to stop dogs - and people - urinating on lampposts
Using innovative 3D printing, the covers will prevent Cartagena street lights from rusting
Each year, towns and cities around Spain launch campaigns against dogs fouling on the streets and they’re generally very well received. But some innovative students in Cartagena have taken this a step further, using 3D printing to design the first plastic cover that protects lampposts from dog, and indeed human, urine.
The UPCT Makers association is a unique project that brings together students from the Polytechnic University and the Social Services of the Cartagena City Council, and this year they have teamed up to use the latest technology so solve this ongoing environmental issue.
Explaining where the inspiration for the urine protector came from, president of the group, Adrián Vidal, said: "It makes me sad to see the street lights rusted by the urine of the dogs and I thought that a plastic protection could prevent their deterioration."
The design is brilliant in its simplicity: a cone and cylinder, adapted to the diameter of the lamppost, with an opening so that it can be attached to the pole, and of course, the Cartagena logo.
"It's the first course of Social Services, but I've already gotten hooked and signed up for the following ones. You have to occupy your time and continue training," another student said of the course.
This latest module finished up last week but the UPCT Volunteering and Disability Care Unit has run several other intergenerational classes, like the hugely popular 'Introduction to chess' and a course aimed at the cultivation of native species, which will resume in the spring.
"It is an enriching experience, in which we learn from their experience while we teach a technology that otherwise they would not be able to know about," the president summed up.
