ARCHIVED - Costa del Sol trials automated Amazon package delivery service
The system will allow Malaga customers to receive packages even when they’re not at home

Online shopping has been growing in popularity in recent years and following the coronavirus pandemic, it’s become the go-to method for many consumers in Spain. But missing a delivery can be a hassle, as it often means a trip to the post office and a lengthy queue.
To avoid this frequent problem, the residents of Malaga have teamed up with Amazon to trial a new automated delivery system, the first of its kind in Spain.
Using a phone app called ‘Amazon Key’, delivery people will be given a code once they establish that the customer isn’t home. This will allow them to enter the front door of the apartment block and leave the parcel outside the buyer’s door. For security reasons, Amazon staff will only have ten minutes to enter and leave the building.
Alternatively, when ordering their products, customers can request that the delivery driver leave the package with a neighbour or doorman, but the general idea of the system is that purchases can be easily dropped off, on time, even when nobody’s home.
The Association of Property Administrators of Malaga and Melilla, which has signed a contract with Amazon to roll out the project, assured that several Costa del Sol communities have already signed up to install the system, which is completely free.
However, not everyone welcomes this step into the shopping future and Fernando Cubillo, who lives in an urbanisation where Amazon Key is being implemented, is worried about safety, insisting that someone could easily sneak inside the building behind the driver without being noticed.
To quell such concerns, Amazon has explained that the new system closely monitors the times that the delivery man arrives and leaves so that unauthorised persons can’t slip in.
Taking the pioneering initiative a step further, the online retailer will install special receptacles in the foyers of buildings where packages can be left for communities that place a large number of monthly orders with Amazon.
